Feast: With Bridget Brewer

The poet Bhanu Kapil once described her work as “stories about girls on the floor of the world.” Using theatre and performance – eating charcoal, laying on the ground, singing – she was able to construct Ban en Banlieue, an incredibly personal and evocative work about body and politics.
Using our own bodies and physical experience as our inspiration, this writing workshop will explore what it means to engage with the senses as a way of writing towards ourselves. We’ll read and view excerpts from work “of the body” (Anais Nin, Hiromi Ito, Bhanu Kapil, contemporary dance, the visions of St. Therese of Avila, the Dadaists, and others), and participate in group conversation and group movement. With the help of both writing and theatre, this workshop will help you be more playful, honest, and connected to your art!
Participants of the workshop will receive a zine containing readings and writing prompts, for future inspiration.

Bridget Brewer @bridgie.b is a writer, performer, and educator based in Austin, TX. Winner of a B. Iden Payne award and recipient of fellowships from Brown University and Surel's Place, her work centralizes Catholic mythology, queer camp, and the somatic as a way of interrogating the private/public theater of devotion in its many forms.

This project will be supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll discuss, define, and explore poetic and comic book terminology (as well as the politics of who is allowed to publish and make in both of these spaces); we’ll look at working poemics, like Bianca Stone and Aidan Koch; and we’ll complete activities which culminate in the creation of our own poetry comic zine! Participants of the workshop will also receive a zine of poetry comics, for future inspiration.

~Application Link in Bio~
Facilitators on the advisory panel spend 5-10 hours a month (attending 1-2 meetings and facilitating 1 workshop). You'll get to plan and host workshops, network with other creatives, and approach artists for potential partnerships. Facilitators can also help the organization grow by updating social media, identifying possible grant opportunities, and getting experience doing other administrative tasks.
We work with each facilitator to tailor the work to fit your skills. All facilitators are given a $50 monthly stipend for their contribution.
Hey beautiful humans! Time to dust off the ol’ drawing floor and play!
