Without Words : A Movement/ Dance Workshop

  • White Light Studio 900 Vargas Road Austin, TX, 78741 United States (map)

The echo of history calls us to perform certain roles due to our gender. In the sphere of partner dance there is generally a leader (male) and a follower (female). We as people do not adhere to these prescriptions -- we fluctuate between lead and follow throughout each day.

At the forefront, ability to Listen guides these actions.

Exploring the fundamentals of body language we will learn how to harness our stillness, enhance the quality of our movement, and explore what it means to listen to each other.  Extending beyond the dance floor these concepts provide a framework creating awareness of our personal relationship to the self and communication with the other.

This workshop will explore musical patterns, technique, isolation, walks and turns; develop coordination, rhythm and spatial awareness. Build non-verbal communication skills and confidence with a fusion of traditional and contemporary dance forms.

About the Instructor:

Since her youth, Whitney has been engaged in nonverbal expression. A shy and observant child she first understood the world through sight and touch. Recognizing that bodies express fundamental truths that the world of words could never touch. During her studies of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico the world of dance became a focus of expression and a study of art. Whitney recognizes partner dance as an outlet of emotion and a compass of understanding. She currently teaches traditional and nuevo ballroom as well as musicality and movement.
